Can my Spouse be Added to my Current Plan?
Whether or not your spouse can be added to your current plan all comes down to the likelihood of your husband or wife needing consistent medical treatment. All healthcare providers will judge whether or not to take someone onto a healthcare plan based on the amount of money that it will potentially cost them. This means if your spouse is suffering from a serious illness which requires treatment on a regular basis, your provider is going to have to pay out additional money than they would do if your spouse was not on the plan. If they judge that the costs of adding your spouse will be so high that it is not in their financial interests to allow it, there is a likely chance that you won't be able to add them.
There are not many ways you can get past this as this financial principle of determining whether or not to add people to healthcare policies will be the case for all private insurance providers across the country. However all healthcare providers do differ in their assessment of financial costs. Some providers will be a lot harsher than others for example.
Who Is Your Provider
A large factor on whether or not your spouse will be accepted onto your current plan is thus based on which provider you choose. Each healthcare provider will have a slightly different way of assessing how much of a risk someone is to their company. Although healthcare providers agree on certain common conditions and the costs they incur they also disagree on other conditions. It is these differences of opinion on the financial costs of certain conditions which will potentially make you able to add your spouse to your plan with one provider whilst being rejected from another.
Most Get Accepted
This being said however it is important to note that it is actually quite rare that someone be outright rejected from being put onto a healthcare insurance policy. This only occurs when someone has a very serious health condition. So unless your spouse needs constant care due to a current or long standing illness, it is likely that they will be allowed to go on your current plan.
The largest concern you should probably have is what affect will adding your spouse have on your insurance premium rather than will my spouse be able to go on my current plan or not. If your spouse has certain illnesses or conditions which mean that the healthcare provider has to spend more time and money on treating these conditions and illnesses, they will raise the price of your insurance premium accordingly. These health conditions will be looked at by your provider after you have requested that your spouse be added to your plan. After this request has been made your provider will go through all the past medical history of your spouse and judge how much they will cost the company. They will do this by talking to the GP of your spouse and assessing their medical history with their own financial methodology.
If your spouse does present more financial costs for your provider the extent to which they will raise your premium will depend on what provider you are with. Some will raise it more than others depending on the way they assess the costs of your spouse. Overall however your spouse should be allowed to get on your plan unless they have a very serious illness, but your premium may go up or down according to the health conditions of your spouse.
