Will my Insurance Cover Cosmetic Procedures?
Most health insurance providers will not include cosmetic procedures as part of their insurance policy. This is because most claims you can make on health insurance are for curable medical conditions. So if you have a chest infection or perhaps an organ transplant your health insurance may cover it, but as cosmetic surgery is not about curing a medical condition most of the time, it will often not be included in health cover.
Cosmetic procedures to simply improve your looks will always be excluded from your cover. However if you get into accident which has a lasting physical damage to your appearance and you want to correct the damage, your private health cover provider may be likely to include it as part of your cover. This however still wouldn't come under the definition of a curable condition which most things have to be to be included in health insurance. So even if you are looking to get a cosmetic procedure to correct a part of your physical appearance which has been altered after an accident you could still have it rejected as part of your cover.
Dependent on Your Provider
All of this ultimately depends on your provider however. Health insurance providers have different ways of assessing the risk that you pose as a customer based on your medical conditions and past. So they will come up with different prices and different exclusions on your policy cover. Look carefully at the detail of your health insurance policy to see if they exclude cosmetic procedures and if they do what conditions are around it. Is the exclusion for all cosmetic procedures or will they allow you to get it under certain conditions?
If you have not yet got health insurance cover and are currently looking for it then compare a range of different providers to see which ones will include cosmetic procedures. If you are looking for a provider who is going to cover cosmetic procedures for what you might deem as vanity purposes, you are not going to have much luck. To pay for these types of cosmetic procedures you are going to have to go to a private cosmetic surgery. If on the other hand you are just looking for health insurance cover which is going to cover you in many circumstances including when you would require cosmetic surgery after an accident, you should be able to find a provider who would include this in your cover.
Look at Different Providers
The internet is a great place to look for providers, after an hour or so of some internet research you should be able to find a couple of providers who include cosmetic procedures in their cover in certain circumstances. These providers may take a while to find but there will be one or two out there who offer this, so just keep looking until you find them. The conditions around a provider who offers cosmetic procedures may however be quite harsh and be so exact that you would never really be able to make a claim for the procedure, but would still be paying more in your monthly premium for having it included in the first place.
So if you do find a provider who includes cosmetic procures as part of their cover, be sure that you are happy with the circumstances that they say they would do it in. If you are not, you need to discuss this with the provider. Although most health insurance providers will not budget from the details of their policy, one or two may listen to your concerns and take them into consideration.
